Kubu Reef sits just north of Tulamben in the village of Kubu, easily reached by a short drive from Amed or Tulamben. Unlike the neighboring Boga Wreck, this site is a natural reef that begins just a few meters from shore and spreads across a gently sloping black sand and volcanic rock bottom.
As you follow the reef down the slope toward deeper water, the terrain broadens into a combination of black sand and scattered coral formations. Around 10–20 m, larger coral patches and reef rock clusters appear, creating natural “streets” and nooks that invite closer inspection and route planning. This mix of sand and reef gives the site a subtly varied profile that rewards careful observation and steady finning through quieter zones.
One interesting and unique feature of Kubu Reef is the presence of artificial objects placed on the bottom over time. If you head slightly east or follow the deeper slope, you’ll encounter bicycles, motorbikes, Buddha statues, and other man made items now partially covered by coral and algae. These objects add contrast and structure to the reef, giving divers visual reference points and opportunities for composition when photographing or sketching the dive.
Because of its depth range and calm conditions, Kubu Reef works well as a long, shallow dive after Boga Wreck. The profile allows for extended bottom time and a relaxed ascent, making it a practical and enjoyable way to complete a dive day in Kubu.
