Just beyond the Pyramid artificial reef in Amed, Pyramid Wall offers a deeper and more dramatic dive compared with the shallower artificial structures nearby. After entering from a short traditional jukung boat pick up, the dive begins over a sloping reef and soon reaches the volcanic wall, which drops steeply down toward deeper water, with depths extending to around 60 meters at its deepest points.
The wall itself is shaped by the region’s volcanic geology, featuring coral covered ledges, overhangs, and rocky outcrops that create a dynamic landscape below the surface. Hard and soft corals, sponges, and sea fans cling to the rock face, and the texture of the reef changes as you move deeper, giving divers a real sense of descending into the blue.
Currents can vary along the wall, and at times there’s enough flow to turn this into a gentle drift dive where you float along the reef at depth, a different feel from Amed’s more sheltered slope dives. Because Pyramid Wall is slightly removed from the busier shore sites, it’s often quiet and uncrowded, letting you enjoy a vertical reef profile and the shifting colors of coral and sponge growth without the crowds.
